Quatrain 10 - 72

L'an mil neuf cent nonante neuf sept mois,
Du ciel viendra un grand Roi d'effrayeur:
Ressusciter le grand Roi d'Angolmois,
Avant après Mars regner par bonheur.

In the year 1999, in the seventh month,
from the sky will come the great King of Terror,
bringing back to life the great King of the Mongols.
Before and after, Mars to reign by good fortune.

THE 1999 PROPHECY EXAMINED

The arrival of July, 1999, was a highly anticipated event by everyone familiar with the prophecies of Nostradamus. Most people expected the worst, but some people held a view of optimism regarding its outcome. Would it be the end of the world?  Would it be the arrival of Nostradamus' so-called third Antichrist?  Would a huge global war occur, or would nothing significant happen in 1999?  All of these questions were fair to ask ourselves.

The following interpretation of this quatrain was written "before" July of 1999. However, on the next page, we have included some interesting commentary about this prophecy written "after" July of 1999 (see the notation for the post facto view).

"In the year 1999, in the seventh month (suggesting July, although the French word 'sept' might suggest the abbreviation for the English word September), from the sky (suggesting an aerial event, perhaps through means of aircraft, missiles or something else) will come the great (as in powerful) King of Terror (suggesting an unnamed leader of a nation who possess a powerful military, probably a foe of Europe and the West), bringing back to life (rebirthing) the great King of the Mongols (Genghiz Khan was the Mongolian king who conquered Asia in the 13th century, thus an Asian military leader seems to be suggested by this phrase). Before and after (some accident or military event in July of 1999), Mars (the symbolic planet of war in astrology) to reign by good fortune" (war appears to reign fortunate for an unnamed nation, or group of nations, "before and after" July of 1999).

If "the great King of the Mongols" is an allusion to Genghiz Khan, we should consider that by the year 1227 the Mongol empire of Khan stretched from the Pacific to the Black Sea. However, if the phrases "the great King of the Mongols" and "the great King of Terror" were both intended as allusions to present or future Asian military leaders, then there are many possibilities to consider.

It is also a possibility that "great King of the Mongols" is an allusion to the Mongol race (rather than a specific reference to the nation of Mongolia).  The Chinese, Mongolians, Siberians, (and other oriental Asians) are all categorized as being members of this ethnic division of the human race.  So in consideration of this fact, we could easily hypothesize that "the great King of the Mongols" is an allusion to China (the most economically and militarily powerful Mongol nation in 1999).

But could a war between North Korea and South Korea be a possibility?  They have been sworn enemies for four decades.  Could there be more trouble in Iraq?  Could there be trouble somewhere else in the Middle East or Europe? Could a future war between communist China and democratic Taiwan be referenced here?  Could a war between India and Pakistan be a possibility here?  Now that each of these two nations possess nuclear weapons the tension in Asia is rising.

Since July (or September) of 1999 is near the change of the millennium, and quatrains #2-46 and #10-74 suggest that warfare might possibly occur near the time of this change, one could wonder if these three quatrains could be connected with each other?

As of March of 1999, NATO nations began a grand aerial bombing campaign against the Yugoslavian military in Kosovo and Serbia. Although this event began four months before July (the "seventh" month), many of the parameters surrounding it appear to fulfill parts of this unique prophecy. In example, since this quatrain mentions war "before" July of 1999, would NATO's military campaign in Yugoslavia (which ended in June) qualify as the event referencing warfare before July of 1999?

In May, NATO air forces accidentally bombed the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade. Could this event be a reference to "bringing back to life the great king of the Mongols" (perhaps alluding to upsetting the Chinese)?

THE 2000 POST FACTO VIEW: Who, or what, was the great King of Terror (who came from the sky in July of 1999)?  Was it an allusion to a person, or to something else? Over the last few decades this phrase has generally been interpreted as a reference, or allusion, to a human being (usually to a terrorist or Asian war lord).  But that was speculation, and or assumption, on behalf of most Nostradamus authors (including myself).

Could the crash of John F. Kennedy Jr.'s airplane in July of 1999 fulfill the line "in the seventh month from the sky will come the great King of Terror"?  Could the human fear of death and bodily injury be the intended definition of "the great King of Terror"?  It might be possible! Since Nostradamus made several predictions about the death of President Kennedy (and Robert F. Kennedy), could a prediction about the death of John F. Kennedy Jr. fit into a familiar Nostradamian theme? It would certainly seem possible.

And in regards to China "the Great King of the Mongols", it should be noted that unknown to the ublic (until early August of 1999), China and Taiwan were involved in an aerial show-down during late July in the skies over the straits which separate the two nations. China, mad at NATO, was also upset with the Taiwanese for publicly suggesting that they were an independent state, free of Communist influence, with no plans of pursuing the "one China" policy of the main-land. Both nation's militaries were on a heightened state of alert as the Chinese captured a Taiwanese island and naval vessel.  Due to this tension the air forces of both nations confronted each other in the skies over the strait. Fortunately, a full scale war was avoided.

In September of 1999, the Russian air force began an aerial bombing campaign in the break-away republic of Chechyna. Could this military campaign satisfy the second part of quatrain #10-72 referencing "war after July of 1999"?  It would seem possible.

Could Nostradamus have intended July of 2000 (the completion of 1999 years and seven months)?
